This week I have attended a yearly event called Mena Mining Conference in Dubai, the title of this article was said by one of the speakers expressing that children are and will be more environmentally aware than the current generation. A whole lecture was devoted to transition from fossil fuels' power to electric power considering the worldwide depleting reserves of the rare earth metals that is required for batteries and electric systems to work.
Listening
to the speakers, I could not comprehend the paradox of the "gold rush"
for mining the batteries materials using heavy equipment that only run on the "Bad
Diesel" fuel and still such materials are called environmentally friendly
materials. I also could not fathom how the transition would happen from readily
available fuels to rear materials just for power storage that will continue be
connected to fossils fuel power generations.
The main issue I have sensed, the western nations are very much concerned
about the environment only in their countries as no new mines are licensed. In
the other hand, their mining companies are all over the world to look for rare
earth materials and use "Bad Diesel" to operate huge mining equipment
to wipe the trees and eliminate the animal habitats which are totally unlawful their
countries.
Concluding
from all the above-mentioned irony, I strongly believe that we are facing a new
Environmental Religion being spread via media and western education systems educating
youngsters " Diesel is Bad" which is showing part of the picture and
hiding the huge mining equipment, shipping fleets, airlines and power generators
feeding the electric grid with most of the power which eventually fill the Batteries
and make them. The western politicians are preaching the new religion not caring
for the environment but in a quest for agitating voters to get their votes. I
hope the new religion will not reach to a level of religious intolerance with
the rest of the world and seek a balance between the environmental issues and
human life issues and not reach that human life and environment only matter in
the western countries.
